T.f. Powys: A Modern Allegorist. The companion novels 'Mr Weston's Good Wine' and 'Unclay' in the light of modern allegorical theory. (Costerus NS 56)

T.F. Powys: A Modern AllegoristT.F. Powys: A Modern Allegorist is a study of an unusual kind. It has a double focus: on the one hand it is an examination of changing attitudes towards allegory, from the early nineteenth century until the present day; on the other, it is a study of the Dorset novelist, fabulist, and short story writer Theodore Francis Powys, an early twentieth century writer of allegorical fiction. The link between these two subjects is the theory of allegory propounded by Angus Fletcher, which the present study takes to be the most helpful and appropriate methodology for examining Powys's achievement. The high reputation that Powys enjoys has hitherto been attended by critical disagreement as to the exact nature of his use of allegory. Marius Buning contends that in this respect Powys has been misunderstood, largely because of the inadequacy of most contemporary responses to allegory, as the opening chapter makes clear. The two chapters devoted to his most celebrated novels Mr. Weston's Good Wine and Unclay provide invaluable guidelines for future scholars and persuasively vindicate the literary subtlety of Powys's art. Marius Buning's book is a ground-braking experiment in meta-critical thinking and intertextual dialogue, which is both valuable for its own sake and illuminating in its treatment of the many critics whom the author so enthusiastically discusses.

Analyzing Scofield: The Life and Errors of C.I. Scofield

ErrorAfter reading most of this book, I would first like to say, that the only perfect man that ever walked the face of this earth,is our lord and saivor Jesus Christ, ones I found error in this book,I stop reading it. On page #62,Paul,quoting Joel, tells the glory of the Church in Acts two, this is not true. It was Peter, not Paul. But please don't believe me, Look for yourself. There may are may not be more, but this is the one,I found, this one is all I needed to see. Always keep both eyes open, seek ye the Truth. (AV1611) Forever.
Should The Title Of This Book Be Changed?I would suggest that instead of spending your hard-earned money on this book that you instead invest it in a copy of "Rightly Dividing The Word Of Truth" by C. I. Scofield which is also available from Amazon.
This book has proven to be a waste of time and money because the authors are "preterists" who mistakenly believe that all of the events described in the Book of Revelation took place between the years 33 A.D. and 70 A.D! If the book has any value at all it is because it will better accquaint you with the errors of preterism. "The Life And Errors Of The Westons And Other Preterists" would be a more appropriate title.
This book is worth readingC.I. Scofield was a fine Christian man and pastor. He is a prime example of the difference Jesus Christ can make in one life. However, his writings, particular the notes in his Scofield Reference Bible, have exerted an influence far beyond Scofield's actual scholastic ability. Many Christians today hold the teachings of Scofield to be on part with the Scripture itself. However, the last time I checked, Scofield did not write any of the 66 books of the Bible.
This book does an adequate job of revealing that Scofield's theology is not without question. While some people equal questioning Scofield with questioning the Apostle Paul, this book does a good job of showing that Scofield's interpretation of Scripture is not the only one with merit. The book is not perfect, but it provides good food for thought. That is, assuming the reader does not equate second guessing Scofield with heresy.
